October’s Themes

You can read any type (e.g., Picture Book, Middle Grade, Graphic Novel, etc.) of kidlit book you want for each theme. In honor of Ame Dyckman’s new book Tea Party Rules, now available everywhere books are sold, I will be giving away a copy as this month’s prize. If you don’t already follow Ame on the twitter, I suggest you do. She is a riot. Without further ado, the October themes.

  1. Halloween is in October. Read a book with a halloween theme.
  2. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Read a book with pink on the cover.
  3. October 31 is Increase Your Psychic Powers Day. Read the book that you think I’m thinking of right now.
  4. October 6 is Mad Hatter Day. Read a book with a hat on the cover.

And here are your October bonus themes:

  1. October 9 is Moldy Cheese Day. Just mention your favorite cheese in the comments for an entry.
  2. October 11 is Take Your Teddy B ear to Work Day. Read a book with a bear in it.
  3. October is Cookie Month. Read a book with a cookie on the cover or in the title.
  4. October is the beginning of Hockey Season. Read a book featuring this great sport.

Don’t forget to come back and post your books here in the comments. Happy reading!

I don’t think you can get much more pink on a cover than “Flora & the Flamingo” by Molly Idle. I am not a fan of the pinking of October though. Things have really gone too far. It is no longer about bringing awareness about a disease, but about the greed of big business.

For the bear book, I read, “What Does My Teddy Bear Do All Day?”. You might be surprised. It isn’t eating cheese.

I read “The Picture of Morty & Ray” by Daniel Pinkwater. It is a creepy tale based loosely on “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. Of course in this version there is pickle juice and discarded chewing gum.

  4. […] Anyway, this book has monkeys. So I was sold right away. Plus, Adam has a great bookdare challenge going on every month. […]

In preparation for Picture Book Month and PiBoIdMo, here are the books I read to meet the challenge:
    1. Halloween: Even Monsters Need Haircuts (hilarious!)
    2. Cancer pink: Shoe-La-La!
    3. Read Adam’s thoughts: The Wednesday Surprise (OK, it was probably Warning: Do Not Open This Book!)
    4. Hat: Journey Cake, Ho!
    5. Cheese: Feta! (and I read Gus Was a Friendly Ghost, for good measure.)
    6. Bear: Tops & Bottoms
    7. Cookie: The Duckling Gets A Cookie!?

Thanks, Adam. ‘Can’t wait to rad your post on Tara’s blog.

It’s the end of the month! Where did October go? Here’s what I read. (Also, I’m a bit embarrassed that I didn’t read a hockey book for as much as I love hockey.)

    1. Halloween – Five Little Pumpkins
    2. Pink – I’m a Frog! By Mo Willems
    3. Psychic – Me and My Dragon – you have boys, so maybe you read dragon books!
    4. Hat – Fortunately the Milk by Gaiman – one of the characters is wearing a hat on the cover

    Bonus
    1. Fave cheese is Havarti!
    2. Tea Party Rules – very bear-y
    3. I ate more cookies than I read books with cookies in them. Oh well.

        Also, you’re getting a year ahead of yourself here… It’s only 2013.

I agree with other commenters here… October seemed to go by quickly! I’ve shared my brief thoughts on each book on Twitter.

    My books for this month:

Halloween theme – Funnybones by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. This one is an oldie from a couple decades ago!
Pink cover – Bloom! by Maria van Lieshout.
The book you’re thinking of – Journey by Aaron Becker. It’s worth the guess, right?
Book with hat on cover – Red Hat by Lita Judge.

Favorite cheese – really good Parmesan!
Book with a bear – One Bear Lost by Karen Hayles and Jenny Jones. Love the soft, playful illustrations in this one.
Cookie in the title – Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward (illustrated by Tomie dePaola).
Hockey – I Did It, Dear Dragon by Margaret Hillert.

Thanks for the another month of the book dare!
