Short and Sweet
This week I’m mixing things up a bit. One quick story and then something cool.
The Story
I had the opportunity to have a catch with my oldest on Saturday. It’s been a while since we threw the ball around, and it was a perfect Autumn day for it. We talked a little about stuff, as you do when you’re throwing the ball. It wasn’t a deep conversation, but I felt like it could have been if we wanted it to be.
This got me thinking. Chatting and having a catch is a great way to connect. A perfect opportunity to get them talking that doesn’t make it seem like you are ‘having a chat.’ I’ve been wondering if there are some other opportunities like this that I haven’t found before. If you know one, let me know in the comments below.
Something Cool
I had the great honor of being able to contribute a post on Developing Your Reading Voice to The Nerdy Book Club blog. What is The Nerdy Book Club? Here’s a bit from their about page.
If you love books, especially those written for children and young adults, then you are an honorary member of The Nerdy Book Club. Like us, you probably always have a book along to read, a title to recommend, and time to talk about works held dear.
This online space was designed to give us a home to share that love of reading with others as well as to organize voting and announcing winners of our First Annual Nerdies Book Awards.
If you’ve never checked them out before, stop by.
I always connected with my kids while driving or when they were driving. We are all just there and conversation was always the best. It still works when they are in town – just get them in a car and you can learn all kinds of things. 🙂
Make a special time to “go to lunch”. Sit at a small table. Chat about this and that while eating. Make sure there is nothing pressing to do afterwards. The gift of conversation while enjoying a meal is becoming a lost art. Embrace it.
